BLUEBERRY VARIETY GUIDE

The types of blueberries grown include Highbush, Southern Highbush and Rabbiteye.

Highbush
Generally requires in excess of 1000 chilling hours (less than 2 degrees C). Mainly self fruitful but will perform better planted near another variety. Most common type in the cooler areas of Australia.
Varieties include Bluecrop, Brigitta, Elliott, Denise, Caroline and Northland. Recent releases Nui Reka and Puru.

Southern Highbush
Chill hours 250 to 600. Fruit ripens earlier than most highbush varieties. Best planted with another variety for pollination. Frost can be a problem.
Varieties include Reveille, Misty and O’Neal

Rabbiteye
Chill hours 450 to 600. Mostly ripens after the highbush types. Compatible cultivars must be interplanted for effective pollination.
Varieties include Premier, Brightwell, Powderblue, Tifblue, T102, Maru and Rahi.
